About Me

Marissa Fontanez with a laptop

As a first-generation college graduate and healthcare professional, I have embraced lifelong learning as a core part of who I am. My interdisciplinary background in psychology, healthcare, education, and research, has allowed me to develop valuable skills and perspectives that I bring into learning experience design.

My expertise lies in:

  • Translating complex concepts into compelling, accessible content

  • Focusing on empathy and critical thinking to design adaptive learning solutions

  • Applying evidence-based research to create impactful educational experiences

  • Rapidly identifying learning gaps and developing innovative solutions

Personally, embracing a minimalist lifestyle and focusing on travel has profoundly changed my perspective on life and our world. I reflect on these experiences in my work by prioritizing inclusive, equity-focused, and accessible design.

I'm an avid reader of both professional development books and fantasy novels, enjoy exploring locally roasted coffee shops, and pursuing creative hobbies like weaving and pottery. These interests fuel my creativity and often inspire fresh approaches to my instructional design work.

Why “Atabey X Designs”?

Atabey is the supreme goddess of my ancestors, the Taino people. I chose this name to honor all the women who shaped me into who I am today.
